I really enjoyed watching your demo, a tall tree near Pensford. I have learned a lot from watching how you press, flick and turn the brush , it doesnt seem to work like that for me, but will persevere! Also with my struggle to abstract from what is in front of me. Thanks for an inspiring demo. I liked that there was no music or commentary.

    Thank you Patricia!
I’m very sorry for the rude delay in my reply – technology at fault – I didn’t get notified!
Very kind of you to get in touch and tell me that. I’m pleased you liked that the video has no audio at all.
I will be making another video quite soon now; just deciding what to do, and then finding the time. Regarding your difficulties with the brush and abstraction, it all just takes a lot of practise! No quick easy answer unfortunately, but I’m sure you know this…. Thanks again & best wishes, Jem

I love the way you paint without sketching first. It looks so free.

Jem Bowden 3 years ago . Reply

    Thank you Kate!
I do usually do a bit of drawing with pencil to mark out the main shapes before I get the paint on though. Just not that much of it, so it isn’t just a matter of ‘colouring in’! All the best, Jem

Hi Jem,
I was impressed with the critique on my first assignment on the Diploma course. It was so encouraging and also very fair, picking up immediately on some points I was not so happy with and giving very useful suggestions. I look forward to an interesting and inspiring year.

    Hi Anne,

Happy to be working with you.

Hi Jem just subscribed to your blog, looking forward to your workshop in Sep at the Sandpiper Studio, never been to one before so quite excited hope you can show me how to loosen up a bit, see you soon.

Jem Bowden 2 years ago . Reply

Thanks Steve, Yes I’m looking forward to the day at Sandpiper. Never visited the area before.
Will do my best to help you over the day with regard to loosening up. It’s going to be partly about taking risks without fear of a bad result – which is basically inevitable many times. That’s the way I work – much of what I do ends up in the bin!
But it’s how you make discoveries too, and hence best way to learn, I feel.

Dear Jem,

I love your paintings! They are beautiful ,elegant and seem so effortless. Looking forward to exploring your blog. I wish I was living in uk so I could enroll in your classes! 🙂

Warm Regards,

Thank you very much, Rani! That’s very kind of you. I wish the painting was effortless, but alas, it is only a lot of persistence that tends to lead a relatively successful work, now and again.

Hello from Ireland, County Clare. I’ve recently started painting having retired a couple of years ago. Been building a house in the meantime. Love it but get frustrated. Ryanair are doing flights to Bristol from Shannon starting in May. I might well be in touch for a lesson or two. In the meantime I’ll be looking at your videos and blog posts.

Jem Bowden 1 year ago . Reply

Hi Joe. Okay, that’s great. Maybe hear from you at some point then.
Good luck with the painting, and the house!

Well Jem, my first experience watching you paint was yesterday with your ‘Marsh harrier over the starling roost’.

We have your starings here on the Western Edge of the Rockies. If I had a raptor living nearby maybe this starling would stop nesting on my property. She has picked the darndest place to roost these past few Springs.

You gave a very impressive demonstration that caught my attention. You have a magic touch with your modified chinese goat hair brush. I have to say that watching you paint your expressive skies was very illustrative of how you compose them.

It appears you have a simple and unique method for holding your paper on your board. Besides using a spring clip or two, are you using some sort of plastic sleeve clip that I see on the left and right vertical edges? I am new to painting so I have seen expensive paper stretching and fastening methods proposed. However, it seems that most pros like yourself have found simple and inexpensive methods for holding your watercolor paper.

Thank you for sharing your talent and methods.

Jem, I would find it useful , and hope others will too, if you could sometime expand on the subject of how to decide on when to leave a painting to dry or become semi-dry (tacky , I think is the technical term). Have never quite grasped the sublety of this topic. Regards Ken.

Jem Bowden 12 months ago . Reply

    Hi Ken,
Thanks for your thought. I will make a note and try to incorporate into a future blog post. However, it’s a bit tricky to put into words, simply. It’s potentially a very big discussion point.
