Knepp is an estate/ex-farm in West Sussex that was experimentally allowed to re-wild (see book 'Wilding' by Isabella Tree for further info) over the last couple of decades. The result is an inspiring landscape, rugged and full of a rich biodiversity of wildlife, free-roaming cattle and pigs left as 'wild' as possible, and now a beaver trial (2020). I camped here in spring 2019 and hope I can return to see it further developed. Former farm fields are allowed to grow almost entirely without human intervention, and nature loves it. The estate already had many historic trees, like the oaks you can see in the painting, and the abundance of birds inevitably draw your eyes to the sky (not that mine need any help with that). I resisted the urge to actually paint any birds, as I thought the painting worked without them, and I want the eye to wander all over the landscape and sky with a minimum of focus.
