This was painted as a demonstration during a visit to Seaton & District Art Society. I had visited the beach on my arrival in town, took many photos, observed colour and tonal relationships and enjoyed the quite wild atmosphere by the edge of the sea. It was drizzling, and I narrowly avoided a tremendous downpour of rain, getting back to my car just in time, where I produced a compositional sketch from the photos. Along with very brief colour notes (useful for a type of subject I'm not used to painting, which this was) I used the 4 inch sketch as the basis of my demo painting. One of those where I felt the painting captured the atmosphere of the day and the scene quite successfully.
