Sunset at Budleigh Salterton
Size: 31 x 51 cm
I was visiting Devon for a demo and workshop, so camped for a couple of days either side. It meant that on this occasion I arrived at Budleigh Salterton just as the sun was about to disappear behind those cliffs. It was barely practical for painting, but I decided to go for it, very quickly, in the short time I had before the light vanished. The drawing was extremely quick, and the painting not much slower. In fact the sun did right down before I'd got it done, so I had to try to remember the effect of the light striking the rims of the boats and so on. I love this feeling of really painting in the moment to capture the atmosphere. You have to really just go for it.
