From photos taken on an atmospheric afternoon winter walk - too cold to paint en plein air. Using a huge japanese brush I've modified rather like my Black Sheep (I call this one the 'Dark Horse') I had to 'go for it' with that tree, making bold strokes with thick paint to get it that dark. The paper was Saunders Waterford Hot Pressed, 200lb, but there is still plenty of tooth to get some 'dry-brush' texture. The composition is finely balanced, with the size, shape and position of the cloud essential. I had to resist the urge to put in a couple of crows in the sky over the field, but in the end I felt the scene worked without; a few existing tiny marks helping to give the sense of scale just enough.
